¿How much o how many? That’s the question
Habría que empezar por el principio para desentrañar las dudas que nos genera esta cuestión. Hay por lo tanto que atender a la diferencia entre much y many. Es muy fácil acordarse de este truco de equivalencia:
- MUCH = mucha/mucha
- MANY = muchos/muchas
Es decir, usaremos MUCH cuando en castellano estemos haciendo uso de mucha o mucho. Por otro lado, usaremos MANY cuando el equivalente en castellano sea muchos o muchas. Esta perspectiva te permite no equivocarte sin tener que pensar en si el azúcar se puede contar o no. La cualidad de contable o de incontable de los sustantivos deviene a veces en una cuestión filosófica y puede encender debates en el aula que no valen la pena. Lo más sencillo es hacer ejercicios sobre how much y how many para acabar de entender la diferencia.

Se trata de unas partículas usadas habitualmente en modo interrogativo:
- How many? – ¿Cuántos/as?
- How much? – ¿Cuánto/cuánta?
