Interview with Verónica Caro: the student who attended 1,010 classes with us!

Hello Verónica! Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Verónica and I work as a sports journalist. I work here in Barcelona, for a company who gives service to different sports federations and I have been studying English here at What’s Up! Rambla Catalunya since the centre opened in September 2012.

Why did you start to study English at What’s Up! four years ago? Did you know that you have attended the incredible amount of 1,010 classes with us?

1,010? Wow! That’s a lot of classes, I didn’t know at all! I studied English when I was at high school and then in another academy but then I left because I didn’t have time to study English. I work here on the same street, and one day, talking to one of my colleagues she told me that a school was going to be opened near! So I came to ask for information and both the method and the flexible schedule worked great for me. Then I decided to try it, and here I am four years after! I didn’t know I had attended so many classes; I have always had a blast here in the lessons, so I guess I lost count along the way!

What are your thoughts about the classes we offer?

I love the fact that there are so many different types of classes! You have Face to Face, where you learn more about grammar and vocabulary in detail and then Living English, which I think is super useful, we pretend we are in a real-life scenario! What to say about Have Fun, so many different activities which you can do, where you can actually speak English! I had studied grammar and grammar for so many years and what I needed was to practise my speaking skills! I love all of them!

Would you say that studying English has had a significant impact on your professional and personal life?

Well, I think so. Maybe now in my current job I don’t use English very much, as we work with local sports. Yet, for my career in general, journalism, I believe it is extremely important to constantly improve English skills!

What can you say about your What’s Up! teachers?

I have met a lot of teachers here throughout these four years! I remember many teachers who are not here anymore and I have missed them! I have had great teachers; all of them were super professional and fun! I love the fact that I was given the opportunity to have teachers from different nationalities and backgrounds, both native and non-native speakers. Each of them has something special! I think it’s a great idea to have different teachers all the time!

You had a First Certificate training with your coach Sebastian and you passed the exam with great results. How was your experience throughout that process?

I remember it was hard, but I think it was really worth it! One year before I had tried to take the test and I failed, because I didn’t know how the exam actually was! By doing this course, my instructor, Sebastián gave me very good lessons and tips, and finally I succeeded in passing it. I remember some weeks were harder than others. 3 long months of hard work, but I managed to pass! It was a great experience.

You have been a very active student. You came to most of our trips! What was your experience like?

My first trip with What’s Up! was to London and at first I have to admit I didn’t have in mind going to the trip, but I got the tickets for free because my sister enrolled at What’s Up! too, so I decided to go. It was very fun, I went on my own, but then we got on fantastically well as a group, and still today I keep in touch with many of them! It was my first time in London, and going with the teachers who knew more about the city was great.

I also went to Dublin last year, while I was doing the First Certificate Course! How crazy is that. I was on the airplane doing my homework, Sebastián and I even kept in touch during the trip! This trip was with people from other centres all around Spain, it was so cool! It was a great experience, and I made new friends there. We are used to having class with the teachers here, and going there with them gives a different angle to it! What’s Up! trips are so much fun!

So, Verónica, how do the future projects in your life look like? How are you going to keep your English in good shape?

I only know one thing for sure, I want to keep on improving my English because I know that if I stop know, it will be more difficult later to start again. I started in Level 5, I can’t believe I have finished Level 12!

So, I want to continue improving, especially my Speaking! I will of course keep on coming to the Weekend Kick-offs and the parties! I have great memories from those activities. Maybe I will take the Advanced, who knows! I would also like to move to an English-speaking country in the future, but I don’t know yet! We will see what the future holds.

Thank you Verónica! We wish you all the best. You rock.
